HEATHER CANTRELL

THE EXTENDED FAMILY

Saturday, February 4, 6-8 PM

Heather CantrellNewman Popiashvili Gallery is pleased to present the second solo exhibition of Heather Cantrell entitled The Extended Family. The photographic series encompasses 10 black and white portraits of Generation X-ers falsely accused of being the offspring of Charles Manson?s Family. This fictitious construction of a family tree configured by the artist uses people from her peer group, her community.

The compositions appear to be candid shots of her subjects in banal moments of life. Larry is caught in his helmet carrying his bicycle ready to leave his workplace and Alison is sitting in a wicker chair in her backyard smoking a cigarette and stroking her pet cat. Each photograph is accompanied with a birth certificate and with the revelation of the person?s identity their allure grows. Now, the cyclist Larry is son of Catherine Share aka Gyspy and the leisurely Alison is the daughter of Sandra Good. The lineage of these adults adds a layer of fascination - these children having mothers and fathers who are serving time in jail for assault, conspiracy and murder. Gypsy served 5 years for starting a shootout with the LAPD while robbing a gun store and it is rumored she is now in the witness protection program; Good was convicted of crimes of conspiracy and sent to jail for 10 years remaining loyal to Charles Manson until today.

In Cantrell's series The Extended Family, the artist continues to explore her interest in collectives and communities. Whether photographing her biological family, or tribes from far away jungles, Cantrell sees a universal connection in creating associative links and attachments. Communes, cults, churches, secrete societies, and Tupperware parties all bring people together.

Heather Cantrell is a Los Angeles based artist. Her work has been previously shown at CCA Wattis institute in San Francisco, CA, Black Dragon Society and the Heyworth Gallery in Los Angeles, CA among others.
