RAÚL DENIEVES

Beacha Beach Babies

December 19, 2007–January 19, 2008
Opening Reception: Wednesday, December 19, 6–8 pm

Raul DeNieves
Newman Popiashvili Gallery is pleased to present Beacha Beach Babies, the first New York solo exhibition of Brooklyn-based artist Raúl deNieves. deNieves with Mikkilandia Productions will transform the gallery into a fantasy world that evokes the sound and spirit of the seaside.

Recently deNieves created an installation as part of the exhibition Red Badge of Courage at the National Newark Building curated by Omar Lopez-Chahoud. The installation titled Three Babies Same Mother Different Father was an explosion in black and white in which the artist covered the walls and floors with his signature style of masking tape his surroundings in geometrical patterns to create an environment in which his drawings, paintings and mixed-media sculpture sit. Three Babies also incorporates some brightly bejeweled elements, papier-mâché sculptures with yarn costumes, mirrors and three-dimensional paper collages.

In Beacha Beach Babies, deNieves will paint, tape and stream the ceilings with crocheted costumes and mirrors. In lieu of the stark black and white backdrop, blue and yellow will be his primary palette. Three-dimensional paintings will cascade onto the floor and sculptures will drape from the ceiling. It will be technicolor spectacular.

Trycrytry and Live with Animals will perform at the opening - the group includes Raúl deNieves, Mikki Michel Olson, Vashti Windish, Alice Cohen with music by Nathan Whipple.

Raúl deNieves was born in 1983 in Morelia Michuacan, Mexico and grew up in San Diego, Ca. In the summer of 2007 the artist has performed at PS 1's Summer Warm-Up and DUMBO Arts Under the Bridge Festival. deNieves has an upcoming solo show at Galerie Giti Nourbakhsch in Berlin in January 2008.
