PAST EXHIBITIONS:

ROVER FEYER
FURRY
Opening Reception Thursday, January 22, 6-8pm
SUITE 106 Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Canadian
painter Rover Anthony Feyer. Feyer’s paintings explore unusual aspects of American life seen from the point of view of a cultural anthropologist. For the past decade Feyer’s subjects have ranged from Appalachian snake handlers to stockcar races and from Midwest tornadoes to Southern Alaskan landscapes. All of these series resulted from extensive research done by the artist in these sub-cultures.
The work on exhibit includes paintings from Feyer’s earlier series Enduro and his latest series entitled Furry. Enduros which are a blend of demolition derby and stockcar racing consist of 100 family sedans known as “beaters” from the 70’s and 80’s that race for 100 laps on a quarter mile paved track. As the track is so congested with cars, there is a lot of unavoidable contact, which results in the potential destruction of the cars. In ”Cluster Fuck,” two cars round the corner in near collision while in “Hit & Run” shows the actual destruction and burning of a car. Aside from the subject matter that is specific to American culture, the intentional drips in some of the works harkens to the machismo of
Abstract Expressionism.
The exhibitions title, Furry, is inspired from the myriad of stuffed animals that adorn the side of the drivers’ cars, some even ride shotgun. There is a humorous contrast between the plush animals and the metal projectiles that resemble animated John Chamberlain sculptures in the death throws of destruction. The stuffed animals have inspired a sub-culture called “Furries” where people dress-up as these stuffed animals. There are estimated to be several thousand throughout the United States and congregate at conventions throughout North America.
The idea of danger is the common theme that runs through the paintings and animation of Rover Feyer. He combines fact and fiction in order to maximize the dramatic effect of what is taking place.
Rover Anthony Feyer was born in Toronto, Canada and his lived and worked in New York for the past 25 years. He studied painting at Parsons and got his MFA in digital visual effects at Sheridan College.
His work has been shown in group-exhibitions throughout New York including White Columns, The Kitchen, David Zwirner and Gavin Brown’s Enterprise.
