LYNNE GOLOB GELFMAN
18 PAINTINGS AND A LOOP
Opening Reception Saturday, November 23, 6 - 8 PM
Irena Popiashvili and Marisa Newman of SUITE 106 are pleased to announce Lynne
Gelfman’s solo exhibition at the gallery. A Miami-based artist, Gelfman comes out of the school of traditional abstract painting. In 18 paintings and a loop her work is recontextualized from the painterly into the aesthetic of design. There are three different works featured in this show: paintings, a ‘wallpaper’ segment and a digital video.
Gelfman’s early paintings were inspired and informed by African and Colombian indigenous textile designs. Thirty years later, Gelfman continues to reference these patterns, but the canvases appear simplified, almost monochromatic. The textures and layers come through only at closer inspection. These intricate layers of her work are underlined and revealed in her video and digital collaborations. The digital prints, also known as ‘wallpapers,’ are either blown-up details from Gelfman’s painting or actual small works repeated ad infinitum. The video piece is the dissection of one painting and each layer of that painting is revealed at every stage of the process. Both works were done in collaboration with architects. The ‘wallpaper’ piece was conceived with Mark Hampton, the modernist architect who redesigned the Wolfsonian Museum in Miami. The 3-minute loop was produced with David Burnett a professor of architecture at The University of Miami.
Lynne Gelfman has shown in museums and galleries throughout the US. Her work is part of the permanent collection of Miami Art Museum, Norton Gallery of Art in Palm Beach, Lowe Art Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art and others. Lynne Gelfman is represented by Fredric Snitzer Gallery in Miami.
