AMATOR: CAMERA BUFF
Opening Reception: June 3, 6-8 PM
Suite 106 Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition of artists who use cinema as an inspiration for their work. The title Amator: Camera Buff comes from the 1970 film by polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski in which the protagonist becomes increasingly obsessed with the process of filming. The current exhibition features artists’ works that are enamored of cinema but use varying media (as opposed to film) in which to express this fascination.
Drawings, paintings and sculpture that are based on film stills are on view. Some of the images are iconic and recognizable - Seth McBride’s Orson Welles, Tamara K.E.’s Robert De Niro and David Krippendorf’s Rita Heyworth. Other works refer to cinema language and composition such as Cristian Alexa’s and Gabriel Delponte’s drawings and Charles Dunn’s sculpture. Alexa recasts characters culled from films, reediting existing scenes into personal scenarios while Delponte uses the format of square stills and arranges his own cinematic narrative. Dunn encompasses the video sleeve of the movie that inspired his papier mache construction.
Michel Auder use of stills is to refrom his own 1970 film Cleopatra filmed at Cinecittà studios in Rome with Viva, Ondine, Taylor Mead and Luis Waldon - Warhol superstars from the late ‘60s and ‘70s. After 30 years, Viva and Lois Waldon look as iconic as the original Liz Taylor and Richard Burton did in the Hollywood version.
