OPPOSITES: Summer Group Exhibition
Thursday, July 8, 6-8 PM
Suite 106 Gallery is pleased to present a summer group exhibition that mixes abstract/conceptual drawings and sculpture with the figurative works.
Tyler Drosdeck’s Foil Flag and Jaye Moon’s Leggo luggage sculpture bridges these opposing camps of abstraction and figuration. Drosdeck’s monochromatic work and Moon’s color-field piece epitomize abstraction, yet the personal approach becomes more clear when the image of an American flag appears within the aluminum foil and the bright Leggos construct suitcases.
The show presents three Atlanta based artists: Carolyn Carr, Michael Gibson and Scott Ingram. Carr’s latest colorful line drawings resemble segments of some unreadable graffiti. Ingram’s Donald Judd-like works on paper are in fact interpretations of California's famous Case Study Houses. Gibson’s drawings on vellum vibrate giving them an illusory and three-dimensional quality.
Eugenio Espinoza, Lynne Gelfman and Annie Wharton all use household objects to create their work. Espinoza collages plastic shopping bags to form his skin drawings, Gelfman blots her paint with an African weaved basket, while Wharton uses a potato masher in a similar manner.
Karlo Kacharava’s expressionistic drawings are rich with literary and cultural references from the 20th century. Gina Magid and Silvia Russel’s pieces are set in the fantasy interiors and environments full of personal drama and violence. Jeffrey Hargrave mimics the clichéd Southern African-American self-taught artists style in his bright pseudo-primitive portraits.
