GERBEN MULDER

GERBEN MULDER

Opening Reception Thursday, September 18, 6 - 8 PM

Gerben MulderSUITE 106 Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Dutch artist Gerben Mulder. Mulder will be exhibiting recent paintings and drawings. These pieces are all figurative works representing children or young adolescents. The works are provocative due to the sexual explicitness of the poses and the physical deformities of his subjects. Yet, another disturbing element to the portraits is the uncertainty of their age – the faces of these boys and girls appear much older than their bodies and poses would suggest.

Mulder’s palette is taken from children rooms’ decor. The paintings all have pastel pink, blue and yellow backgrounds and as a result they appear less harrowing than the drawings. At further examination these images become more arresting as all the portraits resemble each other. The similar physiognomy of asymmetrical faces with exaggerated and distorted features is haunting and uncanny.

Gerben Mulder was born in Rotterdam. He has lived and worked in Berlin, Prague, Moscow and Sao Paolo. He showed with Catherine Bastide Gallery in Brussels, Bodybuilder & Sportsman Gallery in Chicago and Satellite Roebling Hall in New York. He has am upcoming solo exhibitions at Galerie Akinci in Amsterdam.
