OLU OGUIBE

MANY THOUSAND GONE

Opening Reception Sunday, June 2, 2002 2-6 PM

Olu OguibeThe summer exhibition at SUITE 106 will feature Nigerian artist Olu Oguibe and a video by Kelly Lamb. Mr. Oguibe will be showing a segment from his installation Many Thousand Gone. The title comes from an African American Spiritual that was made famous by Bob Dylan. The series includes 101 ink-washed drawings on watercolor paper and is dedicated to the thousands who have died in Africa due to the Aids virus. The haunting faces hover above the gallery and this placement highlights the dramatic nature of these faded, black & white, washed-out visages. The installation becomes a continental memorial to “many thousand gone.” This series was shown in its entirety in Resistancias, curated by Antonio Zaya at the Koldo Mitxelena Cultural Centre in San Sebastián.
