CORDY RYMAN

PAINTINGS

Opening Reception Saturday, February 2, 2002 6 - 9 PM

Cordy RymanSUITE 106 is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Cordy Ryman. Ryman’s paintings, albeit unintentional, are modern street-made Maleviches. His work is created from found materials that are assembled and painted, resulting in improvisational compositions. Ryman’s materials are often aggressive and dangerous: steel edges, un-sanded wood and exposed nails. Yet, these perilous objects are themselves fragile and what is menacing about the work is also what makes the painting vulnerable and romantic.

In this exhibition, Cordy Ryman introduces a new version of his paintings - corner pieces. These paintings are small irregularly shaped wooden panels that are connected with a steel belt. They are modern reminiscences of Vladimir Tatlin’s seminal Counter Relief. Unlike the Constructivists whose agenda was to incorporate the newest industrial materials to create art, Ryman makes his work from the refuse of modernity. His use of foam core, aluminum, Plexiglas, steel mesh, vinyl, plastic, tin and linoleum is the Constructivists’ goal realized, their prophecy come true.

Cordy Ryman graduated from the School of Visual Arts and has exhibited in New York, Seattle and in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami. He also shows with Bernier/Eliades gallery in Brussels and Athens.
