Newman Popiashvili gallery is pleased to present Ex Ovo Omnia, the first solo show of Kören Beck Tomlinson at the gallery. Beck Tomlinson is a Minnesota based artist whose abstract paintings play on the tension between nature and artifice, order and chaos, and her fascination with scientific imagery.
Ex Ovo Omnia, or, Everything From an Egg, is drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphosis by way of Jeffrey Eugenides’s Middlesex. Life and the accompanying cycle of manifestation and transformation are a recurring theme in Beck Tomlinson’s work.
Her works embody ideas of conception - of living beings, cells, stars and the universe itself. Ex Ovo Omnia would best describe the artist's interest in the ways by which we have been able uncover and piece together our body of knowledge through both art and cutting edge science.
Playing with the boundaries of scale and context, Beck Tomlinson creates imagery that appear to capture the fragmented pieces of larger phenomena. The interwoven, simple shapes are evocative of both simple life forms and astronomical events which unfold on the canvas, creating an abstract narrative.
In Kören Beck Tomlinson’s paintings, absence of defined events provides her with the unique ability to connect to the viewer on an visceral level. The undetermined points of view and ambiguity of scale in her paintings make them appear as snapshots of a part of a great event, one that cannot be fully understood.
